What is Glaucoma?

posted by: Bud O'Leary, OD

Glaucoma is a disease of the optic nerve, a nerve that runs from the back of the eye to the brain. Generally painless, glaucoma is characterized by progressive atrophy of the nerve and most often affects peripheral vision. It does not affect central vision until its later stages. Left untreated, glaucoma may result in blindness. The formal medical name for glaucoma is Glaucomatous Optic Neuropathy.
